Common Causes of Hip Pain

Hip pain, though common, should not be ignored. Early detection is necessary to prevent complications and enhance treatment effectiveness. Therefore, it’s crucial to recognise the signs and symptoms of hip pain, which may manifest as:

The hip joint is crucial for diverse movements like walking, running, and dancing. To cope with hip pain, individuals may adopt a noticeable limp in an attempt to reduce forces exerted on the hip.
A Noticable Limp

Swelling and Inflammation

Prolonged joint stress may induce inflammation in the bursa, a fluid-filled sac around the joint, indicating possible trochanteric bursitis. This condition not only causes swelling around the hip joint but also hinders pain-free movement.

Muscle Weakness

A healthy hip joint helps prevent muscle weakness by providing a balance of mobility and stability, boosting overall body strength and reducing the risk of related issues.

Pain During and/or Rest

Hip pain during rest can result from conditions like bursitis, osteoarthritis, sciatic-piriformis syndrome, tendonitis, or arthritis. Understanding symptoms provides insights into the pain's underlying cause, whether stemming from a sudden injury or a chronic issue.

Clicking, Popping, or Grinding Sensations

These sensations in the hip can occur when supporting muscles and tendons become unusually tight. The snapping or popping noise happens as tight tissue crosses a bony ridge in the hip joint, but it may indicate more serious issues.

HIP_ARTHROSCOPY_img

HIP ARTHROSCOPY

Through small incisions and specialised equipment, this technique grants orthopaedic surgeons access to the hip joint, enabling them to address various issues like labral tears, cartilage damage, and impingement with precision.

HIP_REPLACEMENT_img

HIP REPLACEMENT

When hip pain is rooted in advanced arthritis or severe joint deterioration, hip replacement will be the go-to treatment. This procedure involves substituting the compromised joint with an artificial implant, effectively minimising pain and reinstating functional mobility.

FEMORAL_OSTEOPLASTY_img

FEMORAL OSTEOPLASTY

This is a procedure where your femur is surgically altered. This procedure involves reshaping the femur to mitigate impingement, thus facilitating smoother joint movement and reducing discomfort.

PERIACETABULAR_OSTEOTOMY_img

PERIACETABULAR OSTEOTOMY

Commonly performed on those with specific hip conditions such as shallow hip sockets (acetabular dysplasia), periacetabular osteotomy repositions the socket to fit better with the femoral head. This adjustment can promote better hip health and joint coordination.

FAQS

Mobility and Functionality

Check out our list of commonly asked questions to find answers to any general queries you may have.

How can I gauge if my hip pain requires a doctor's attention?

If you have significant pain and stiffness in the joint, impaired mobility, and noticeable bruising and swelling, it may be a serious issue, and it is advisable to seek medical attention.

Firstly, the doctor conducts a physical exam to locate pain, assess mobility, and check the strength of the affected area. Medical history is reviewed for underlying conditions. In some cases, X-rays or MRIs may be needed for a clearer understanding of the condition and accurate treatment advice.

The timeline for returning to work or sports after an injury varies based on your age, the treatment received, and your health before the incident. It’s essential not to rush recovery, as it may lead to re-injury or complications.

Your doctor will collaborate with you to develop a thorough recovery programme, ensuring a gradual and effective healing process to restore you to your initial condition.

Before surgery, follow these steps:

1) Stop blood thinners after consulting with us and share an updated medication list for advice.

2) Concentrate on stretching and strengthening hip and lower limb muscles.

3) Quit smoking and restrict alcohol intake.

4) Ensure bathroom safety, remove tripping hazards, and adjust bed/chair height.

5) Get slip-on sandals ready for post-surgery convenience.
